Healthy People Illawarra was established in 2009 in response to a strong strategic and administrative need to specifically recognise a range of programs and activities which are directly engaged in preventing or controlling diseases in people living in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions.
As such, Healthy People Illawarra is a sister organisation to Healthy Cities Illawarra and the organisations often work closely together on a range of health promotion projects with a regional focus.
As Healthy People Illawarra grows and attracts more funding there will be additional opportunities to undertake a range of disease prevention activities in the areas of nutrition, tobacco control, physical activity, mental wellbeing and sexual health.
The goals of Healthy People Illawarra (HPI) are to:
- Undertake activities which promote the prevention and control of disease
- Provide facilities and support to individuals and groups that act to prevent disease
- Collaborate with government and non-government organisations to develop initiatives which prevent or control disease.
- Source funds for disease prevention initiatives from government, business and other grant sources
