Healthy Cities Illawarra was successful in acquiring funding from the Recreational Fishing Trust program, through the NSW department of Primary Industries, to design and install a number of Fish Measuring Stations.
On-site information of fish bag and size limits for anglers in the Illawarra did not provide identification pictures, a ruler for measurement, or information in languages other than English.
Healthy Cities Illawarra worked with Illawarra Fisheries to develop Fish Measuring Stations with Bag and size limit information for 15 of the most commonly caught fish in the region. All information on the sign was in 5 languages to reflect the diversity of the local angling community: English, Vietnamese, Macedonian, Portugese, and Arabic. Photo-realistic pictures of the fish species were provided for easy identification, and a ruler made fish measurement accurate.
The signs were placed at popular fishing spots where local fisheries officers reported many anglers breaking fish bag and size regulations.
